Our Back Forty

Today's Wonder of the World is...My Old Handmade Rake that I found in a French junk store for six dollars.

Isn't it amazing? I've hung it as art over my back door because I think it's beautiful.
Is that weird?
When I brought it home, Todd assumed I'd let him use it! He's so funny. I told him certainly not!
But it does make me feel like a farmer.

If I had Photoshop I might change that pitchfork to my rake.

Hey, it's been a while since you've seen our coffee table garden.
Would you like to take a peek?

Tanner is standing guard. Boy, it looks like a mess from that viewpoint.
Let me back up a little.

It still doesn't look that much better, but at least you can tell that it's growing.
Look at the tomatoes in the back! The collards are trying to hog all the space. The beans are a little wimpy. Maybe they're intimidated by the trellis Todd strung up. (You mean I'm expected to grow that high?)
Perhaps I think a little too much about vegetable self esteem.

Tanner thinks it all looks delicious.

Or perhaps he's licking his chops over our sneaky little garden pests with their bushy tails.

They like to hop around and dig little holes. I'm not sure that they're getting much. They seem to prefer asparagus the best.

You probably can't see the holes from here, but they're there.
The great thing about a miniature garden is that I can just run my fingers through the soil, and it's raked fine. No more holes.
And I didn't even have to take my art rake off the wall and dirty its tines.
Tom Thumb gardening. That's for me!

Nice manicure, thumb!
(Sorry--I know that this photo has nothing to do with gardening, but I saw it on flickr and couldn't resist. Guess what his name is..."that tom bell"!)
Have a marvelous Monday everybody!
Love, Becky

Hey, and if you get Photoshop you might want to turn Tom Thumb green. ;-)

I am impressed by your gardening technique---have you done that before? I love your concrete pig, but I'm afraid all of my rabbits would hate it if I brought home a "ham".

Thank you for that fun post. I love the rake. I think a rake photo shopped into that photo would be totally cool. I agree with La Balette Rouge, turn Tom Thumb green that would be fun to see.

Great idea la belette. That would be funny. I wonder if I can do that on my little photo program...I'll have to experiment.
Dana, no, this is Todd's first time at tabletop gardening. I recommend it, especially if you have a dog that starts digging the minute he sees you do it. So far we've enjoyed lots of cilantro and some basil and onions and we're waiting on the big stuff. I'll let you know how it goes.
And ha ha on the ham thing. That pig does like having his photo taken.

You're quite welcome, Tattingchic! And I will see what I can do.

Our beach trip is almost over and I must say that I have so enjoyed the solitude. (And yes there is a lot of solitude even with 6 teenage girls. They come and they go.) There's been a lot of laughter, so we're all having a nice time, I think.

I love the beach air--the real thing is so much better than my summer surf car freshener!

Hi Rebecca!!
Love the coffee table garden. Tanner looks so cute as does the garden pest. We have boring plain brown squirrels here. Your are much cuter. Is that a chipmunk, or a squirrel?
You have a great Monday yourself!!

Don't you just love the things you can find in antique / junk stores and yard sales? That rake's pretty cool - looks like an original from pioneer days in the US, nice. Does it pull out weeds when you rake? If so I'd like to borrow it.

Hey Rosemary, it's a chipmunk. They're so very cute, but a little annoying when they eat the asparagus. Still, it's hard to hate them.

Randy, I'm afraid it does not pull weeds out. But I'm just guessing since I've never used it. And won't. Too pretty.

Hi Nancy! Glad you like the thumb-man.

Love your photos and don't you and Todd look so authentic!! I think the rake makes beautiful art -- I'm always putting things on my walls that you wouldn't think of...
