Nothing Could Be Finer...

Today's wonder of the World is...The Palmetto Tree!

The Sabal Palmetto has been the Official State Tree of South Carolina since 1939.
You can find them all over the South Carolina coast, and even in the upper parts of the state.

In our yard, you can only find them on our license plate.

I don't really know why I covered up the numbers. Maybe it's because I'm paranoid. But I'm sure you don't care about my license plate numbers. I've already told you way too much useless stuff about me anyway. The only thing you might want to know about my license plate is why is that thing so filthy?
I'd like to know that too.

I could go on and on about on how disappointed I was the day I went to the DMV in Greer (after moving back from unhurried France to the USA,) when the grumpy lady behind the counter handed me a license plate with the word RUN on it. I did not want to run. I still don't.
But I'm getting off subject.
Back to palmetto trees...

I just love their bark.

It reminds me of this.

Not the boots (although they are awfully cute.) It's the hounds tooth pattern.

I like this palm too, but it's not a palmetto. It's probably related.
Like a brother or a sister.

Look at its bark.

That bark reminds me of this...

It's an antique French wine bottle dryer.

Hey, speaking of palm trees being related to each other, look at these that I found on our beach trip.

It's a mommy and daddy palmetto, and a whole litter of babies!

Besides being pretty, the palmetto tree also gives us hearts of palm.
No, not that.
I'm talking about this...

It's those yummy cylinders we put in salads. I was shocked to find out that they come from the leaf bud of a palmetto tree. They are delicious but from what I've read, the harvest apparently destroys the tree. No wonder they're expensive! So I think I'm going to switch to artichoke hearts from now on. They taste very similar and I can still eat my heart out (ha ha) with no palmetto- tree- killer- guilt.

Speaking of saving change...there's another palmetto!

Have a wonder-full Monday! And don't take any wooden quarters. I mean nickels.
(People just don't use that expression anymore and I miss it. So there.)
Love, Becky

PS. Thanks for the public flickr photos, paulaniz67, Gare and Kitty, devlyn, and canbeafree1!

Rebecca: Wow!! I wrote a post about palms yesterday. And, I decided to post it later this week. But, I am amazed by the synchronicity. It is not every day you see a Palm post.Hmm, the only thing you left out is your Palm Pilot.;-)

Okay, I tried to work out a acronym for your license plate. This is the best I could do: Rebecca Uber Navigator.

And, that salad looks so delicious.

Cool. I have seen this tree and I didn't know what it was. I will not be eating hearts of palm, either. Already too much tree destroying going on in this country!

Oh I never would have guessed attendance cards, even with the giveaway pic. You really stumped me, but that isn't very hard:) Of course you can add me! I would be ever so flattered! I'd like to add you as well! Please use the grosgrainfabulous site. It's the one I'm focusing most of my attention on now. Thank you again for your lovely comment!

Hey Penny, yes it does remind me of the tropics. And we have the weather to match lately!

La belette--ooh, spooky! It is weird how that works. I guess great minds think alike! I have no palm pilot--but that would have been perfect. Rebecca Uber Navigator! Love it! If only I had a good sense of direction. (But that's what maps are for--at least that's what I keep telling myself!)

Hey terri and bob. I'm feeling a little insecure about my tree identification. I hope I've told y'all right. Some palmettos in pictures I just looked at don't have that criss cross bark all the way down like the ones in my pictures. But some do. Any botonists out there?

Hey tumtum tree! I'm glad to add you! You remind me of all those dresses I used to sew for Sarah. And your girls are too cute!

You are too funny. I love the comparisons between the barks and the things they remind you of. Your bottle drier reminds me of the bottle trees that are popular here - old dead tree trunks with pretty colored glass bottles stuck on all the stubs. At first I thought they were tacky, but they are growing on me. And speaking of tacky, I've got two photos of "gigantic bizarre-o" things posted for you on my blog (hillcountryliving.blogspot.com). Enjoy!

Oh my goodness, Becky (hill country hippie) YOU MADE MY DAY!
Thank you for posting the gigantic watermelon water tower. I love it.
Maybe one day I can see it in person!

Thank you for that very educational post and now I know why that area of the USA has a tatting guild called "The Palmetto Tatters" and now I know why. Thanks I've learned so much. You have a fun blog to read.

Hi Becky,

We just got back from a beach trip and I have been missing the palm trees all day! It was great to stop in and see all sorts of palm trees.

So now we know - in that commercial, Eul Gibbons meant to say "Ever eat a palm tree?"

That is the first extensive "palm post" I have ever read-----thank you for the wonderful comparisons you made along the way! Too entertaining!! The boots are a keeper. I have never had hearts of palm--now I know why!! Poor trees. Thanks for that info! Keep it coming, you're a treat.

I like the palm theme today. Yesterday my neice was wearing a T-shirt with a large palm on it, and the palm was made up of white tiger-paws. The white crescent moon was next to it, which gives it the SC identity - the tiger-paws adding the Clemson touch. 40 years ago when my wife moved to Greenville area, her parents had a palm planted in their front yard. It is still there and thriving very well and still cared for by her mother(82) - must be one of the oldest palms around!

I love this! The palm trees in our yard is one of the only things my house had going for it the day we bought it.
