Pillow talk

Today's Wonder of the World is... A Good Pillow!

This is my favorite pillow--the blue gingham one (the toile one is just for looks) --and today I am rejoicing because it has come home to me!!!
Hurray!
My big fat prodigal pillow!
Oh how my neck is celebrating! Oh how my head is happy!
I'd like to throw a pillow party, except I'm afraid that someone in this sneaky family might "accidentally" get my pillow mixed up with theirs, and then I'd be favorite-pillow-less yet again.

Pillows are very important in my family. Are they in yours?

While we were in France we discovered down pillows. Ooh, the comfort. We also discovered les traversins-the long sausage link bolster pillows. You know, like the one at the head of this bed.

Not so comfortable, at least in my opinion. Maybe you have to grow up using them.
Although that bed does look really inviting. I don't know whose it is because it's a public photo from flickr. Don't you love the wrought iron window guard? I bet you could lie down in that bed and feel the breeze and smell bread baking from the corner boulangerie. Ah, France.
I could crawl right into that bed.

I digress. Back to pillows...

You might not believe this, but more than anything else, my daughter wanted a fancy-shmancy pillow for Christmas last year.
I asked her, "Isn't there something else you want? Some CDs? Gift cards for a trendy store? Something more...uh...normal for a seventeen year old girl?"
"No," she said. "I want a pillow."
"But... what will you say when your friends ask you, 'Hey Sarah, what did you get for Christmas?'"
"I will tell them I got the most amazing pillow in the whole wide world. It's what I've always wanted."

So we bought her a pillow.

She was thrilled!

The only person in our family who doesn't have a favorite pillow is Tanner.
He doesn't need a pillow, as you can see.

Yes, he actually sleeps like that. His eyes are open because he heard me take the picture, but just a second before that he was snoozing away. With his head hanging off.

Although sometimes he sleeps like this...

Recognize the matelasse? That's my bed he's been sleeping on.

Sometimes, Tanner IS a pillow.

Don't mind my couch there. I bought it at a garage sale, and I started to reupholster it. That was two years ago. It's still in my bedroom. One day it will be completely red, whenever I get around to it.

Now, let me tell you the short saga of my pillow, so that you will understand my joy.

One Saturday I woke up and my favorite pillow was gone.
I looked everywhere. After a half hour of searching the house and the backyard, I started to wonder if Tanner had eaten it.

I called my husband, who was taking Ben to a track meet in Columbia.
"Don't worry," he said. "The pillow's with us."
That rascal! Ben had snagged it at 5am that very morning, right off my bed! (You may think he's a hero after yesterday's post, but let me tell you, he's a no-good pillow poacher!) He claims he didn't know it was my favorite one, and that I did not have my head on it at the time he swiped it.

"That's okay," I told myself. He will take good care of my pillow. After all, Todd is there. Todd will not let anything happen to it.

My pillow did not come back home!

It was pillow- napped!

Three days later, after I had had a conniption fit that Ben would let someone else on the track team borrow my pillow, and that he had promised me he'd get it back that very next day which he hadn't, I walked by the computer.
Ben was on facebook. He was looking at the site of his friend John.
This is the profile picture John had on his site:

HEY!
THAT'S MY PILLOW!

(Ben changed the pillowcase, so it wouldn't look girly.)
But I have it back now, so don't worry.
Life is good again.

I know it's not Christmas, but I thought this kind of went with today's post. Although now that I'm looking at it again, that dog's winking is making me question his motives. Although the cat looks content. Maybe it's the pillow.

What about you? Are you picky about your pillow? Or would a stone slab be just as fine? Pillow stories, anyone?

Don't forget to put your name in the hat (in Monday's post) for the French Postcard Give-Away. The drawing will be this evening and the winners posted Saturday morning!
Have a great weekend! And sleep well!

TOOO funny, that "pillow talk" of yours! Sometimes our families do NOT give OUR stuff the respect it deserves!!! You certainly made me stop and think about favorite pillows and I guess I don't have one. It's a good thing cuz someone would be swiping it at my house, too. You're dog is a cutie. We used to have a Golden when our kids were little. (I'm guessing he's a Golden.) He was big, and a shedder, and a digger, and a jumper-over-the-fencer, BUT we loved him. They are gentle giants and wonderful family dogs. A very enjoyable post(again).

What a fun post! And a good reminder that I bought new pillows and I must order the pillow covers so we can use them. xoxo

I don't have a favorite pillow, but my 6-year-old son does. He's named it Marshmallow, and heaven forbid it goes missing before bedtime.

Great post! I added a comment yesterday as well, but it was anonymous, so I don't think it showed up. So a day later - what a great guy Ben is, and what a lucky baby that was!

We had a missing pillow mystery of epic proportions here last year. Various family members would drag their pillows from their bedrooms, in direct defiance of my increasingly-shrill orders, and leave them lying all over the property. Usually in front of the TV, but sometimes in the kitchen, the laundry room, the cars, or the middle of the backyard.

Then they'd disappear.

My edict has always been, "If it's on the floor, it's in the trash," so I was the primary suspect. Especially since I was the one always yelling about the dragged-out bedroom stuff.

But when my eldest went away to college last year and left something behind that he wanted mailed, we had to pick the lock on his bedroom door...and found ALL the missing pillows. Every last one. And their replacements, which had gone missing in turn. There was almost no room on the bed for a body.

A pillow version of the SPCA.

Yes, I'm fussy about pillows. We spend about a third of our lives asleep (if we're lucky), so why not be fussy?

I hate big, fluffy feather pillows that let my head sink down to bed level, suffocated by a big wall of feathery pillow on either side of my face. Firm pillows rule!

And I could never sleep with my head hanging off a couch like Tanner. But then, I think he's already proved he's a unique animal.

Oh I get it!!
My pillow goes everywhere with me.
I don't leave home without it.
It's been to all the fancy hotels.
It's a special neck one from the chiropractor. It's like the memory foam. I do love good down pillows too. I am a pillow person.
Great post!!!
Have a great weekend!

LOL! :P
I can sleep without a pillow. All I need is just a small cushion. However, I do love to soft, fluffy, feathery pillows! Can't say no to that!

What a synchronicity. When I woke up this a.m. I thought about how we will pack our pillows to take them to France with us. I don't go anywhere without my pillow.

So happy your pillow made it safely home to you! Will you roast a fatted lamb for prodigal pillows home coming?;-)

I do have a pillow saga! I have bought a GAZILLION pillows and never found a good one. I have no luck.

What is this magical pillow you have called? Where can I buy one?

High school boys are funny. I loved that he switched the pillow case so it wouldn't look girl.

I'm enjoying all this pillow love!
Thanks for sharing, folks!

Now to answer a couple questions...

No la belette, no fatted lamb, but I will do a little dance!

And May, it's a Tempur-Pedic pillow. If you google it, you'll find all sorts of places to get one, but I bought mine on ebay. (And no people, it wasn't used. For some reason that would be gross.) I borrowed it one night from Sarah, just to try it out, and I see what she means. It is truly magical. At least for the Ramsey head.

I just told Steve we should get that pillow for Sarah for graduation...now what weird thing can we get her? You have to let us know...we can get one for Ben...for you...if you see what I mean. Put me in for the post cards (can family win...or does this work like on TV where you cannot be related?) Whatever! We love Ben even when he's a pillow poacher.

yep I can understand that, I guess a good pillow is worth it's weight in gold - personally I like two under my head :-)

Thanks for stopping by my blog.

Love the pillow post! I'd go crazy without my pillow!

I totally agree with the nice pillow thing. We are pretty cheap about most things, but my husband REFUSES to buy a cheap pillow. Refuses. We've been "saving up" for a new pillow for him for years!! LOL!

I am a very mild mannered, white haired, shy and quiet (ha!) grandmotherly type but death to the person who swipes my pillow! Loved this blog!

Traversins are really best used to curl up to at night when you're sleeping alone in the bed. I never could sleep with my head on the one my host mother had on the bed when I was in France. Instead, I used an awesome lavender-scented neck pillow I bought from a Nature et Decouvertes store there. I love that neck pillow.

Hey Lori Ann, I'll have to try sleeping that way next time I'm in France. I'd have to kick my husband out of the bed, but it might be worth it!
And I loved Nature et Decouvertes!
