Joyeux Anniversaire USA!

Today's Wonder of the World is...Lady Liberty!

Here's her French sister in Paris. (Thanks for the photo, flickr friend Andreas Petersen!)
I love this poem. It reminds me of what the USA set out to be.

The New Colossus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Emma Lazarus, 1883

Happy Birthday USA!

Lady Liberty, may we make you proud in the years to come!

Enjoy the weekend y'all!
Love, Becky

Nice pic of Lady Liberty. She's a magnificent piece of art. Have been up the stairs to her crown 3-times. Thanks for reminding me of those fun times way back then. Was there about 4 years ago on the boat tour, but as you know that since the Twin Towers, nobody is allowed to go up anymore. You can go inside to the gift shop - thats all. Where is the one in Paris located? As many times as I've been to Paris I've never seen the twin.
Loved the Joan of Arc card - the armor she was wearing was quite awesome.

I had never seen the poem in its entirety! My brother got to see the French Stature of Liberty when he last visited Paris. He said it was very cool out there in the Seine. Not sure he knew there was a French counterpart, but after all, it was a gift to the US from France.

Sweet baby, is she related to you?

I love that poem too. In fact, I was in choir in elementary school and we learned a song with it. To this day, I know every word of that song.

Isn't it funny how some stuff you learn as a kid stays with you forever?
