Lily of the Valley

Today's Wonder of the World is...the Lily of the Valley!

Friends, I just can't believe that I let Friday go by without wishing you a happy May Day!
Didn't my time in France teach me anything?
Happy belated May Day to you!
Allow me to send you a virtual bouquet of muguets just as I'd do in France, to celebrate friendship and the arrival of spring.

Or maybe this card would suffice.

See? Even strange little dancing cats enjoy passing out flowers to their friends on le premier mai.
If we were in France, I could buy you a bouquet of muguets from a roadside vendor.

Maybe from this gentleman.

Did you know that the May Day muguet custom is so popular that everyone is allowed to set up shop? You don't even need a permit to have your own stand.
The custom started back in 1561 when someone gave King Charles IX a bouquet as a good luck charm, and he started handing them out to the ladies of the court. Now everyone does it, and you get a kiss in return, of course!

I'd be happy to give out kisses if I could fill my house with that sweet fragrance.
Happy Spring, my friends!

Your friendship means so much to me!

Have a wonder-full Monday, y'all!
Love, Becky

PS. Enjoy this little Lily of the Valley ditty from Ethel Mertz.

I spent most of last night (at least until it got dark) transplanting some lily of the valley...of course none of mine are blooming yet, but soon!
Have a good day.

I have some of flowers similar to these-a friend gave me the plants a few years ago. Such delicate, yet fun little flowers.

And a belated Happy May Day to you…

We had a wonderful patch of lily of the valley that we inherited with our first house. I looked forward to the wonderful smell each May. The patch was under our bedroom window, it was like sleeping in heaven…

I just LOVE lilies-of-the-valley! They are one of my favorite flowers! Oddly, I've never seen one in real life! Isn't that sad! I would love to have some in a garden one day along with bleeding hearts! :)

Happy May Day to you too.
I always love to stop by and see what you are up to.
Enjoy your day,

My mom grew these and we were always so excited to see them poking up out of the ground! I wish I could grow them here.

I love muguets too. My birthday is may so I feel a special connection to them. I can't have them in the house though. They make my husband sneeze.

I've always adored Ethel Mertz.
I didn't know about the French custom. Thanks for the info!

That first shot is superbly composed, with a great use of colour contrast.

Happy belated May day to you!

I love lilies-of-the valley. They remind me of my childhood. We had them planted around the base of a large Oak tree. They officially told us spring had sprung.

The video was fun. I thought Ethel rocked!

Have a great Monday.

Lily of the Valley is one of my top five favorite flowers.

I hope Deb doesn't see this post. She'll want to plant the stuff & I'm worn out from "her" latest botanical craze. By the way - Cinco de Mayo was invented for folks that forgot to wish everyone a happy May Day - but it seems kinda weird to celebrate mayonnaise.

Aw! What a sweet tradition. And if we were in Hawaii, it would be Lei Day. And I could give you a lei to make your day.

I'd love that, May.
And how about that...a day just for you! May day!

I love all these sweet smelling muguet memories!

Jaxpop, I should send you a bottle of Hellmans tomorrow!

I had no idea that Vivian could sing. Love the Lily pictures that you shared. I don't see those growing around here(northern Arkansas), perhaps they do not do well here?

I LOVE Lily of the Valley ... and have discovered that they spread like wildfire in a garden ... not a bad thing! :-)

I do love their smell, though I've never been able to get any to grow around here...
