Do you cats like to sing?
These gorgeous ladies from my church circle do.
And no, that's not Santa there on the couch, far right. That's me, with the combination of incredibly poor posture and the pinkish sweater that gives me either a nine month old fetus or Santa's jelly belly, which I really don't have. (Not much of one, that is.) I would have used a different photo, but the other one made me look like Santa had replaced the eggnog with straight rum, no ice.
So back to the caroling.
I had the best time at our Christmas party last week because guess what we did.
No, I'm not talking about the Christmas trees and stars we tore out of paper with our eyes closed.
We stood around the piano and sang Christmas carols!
Yes we did! Silly ones, holy ones, ones we knew the words to and others we didn't. (Hint: for ones you don't know, just mouth the word watermelon over and over again and no one will know the difference.) Singing carols at the piano was SO FUN! I plan to force my family to do it! You heard right, kids! It's going to be great!
Sorry for all the exclamation points, but they're absolutely necessary.
What about you? Do you do this, or does the cheese factor of such a Norman Rockwell moment frighten you a bit? I say, DIVE INTO the cheesiness. Embrace it. You'll be surprised how it fills your heart with Christmas joy.
Before you go, a couple questions. Which carol would you insist on singing? One that drives you crazy? Favorite new one? Old one?
As for me, here's my list of notables:
Silver Bells--from the Christmas album my family used to play
Little Donkey--taught to me by a British friend during our French life
Il est né le Divin Enfant--also from our French life. It's so lovely.
Silent Night--no explanation necessary. It's not Christmas without it, sung by candlelight.
But in my opinion, you can leave We Three Kings off the list. I love the melody, but my brain won't stop replacing the words with "tried to smoke a rubber cigar. It was loaded and exploded..."

Recently, "O Holy Night" has been driving me crazy. It feels tedious and over the top. I used to like it, before I was forced to play the piano accompaniment with my dad singing.
My new fave is Dylan's "Must be Santa." :)

I just asked my family this question yesterday. How funny. And opposite of Jama I say I have O Holy Night number one with a bullet. I was in college when I finally listened to the reverence of the words and my favorite part..."long lay the world in sin and error pining, til HE appeared and the soul felt its worth.." Oh, my. Then Joy to the World and silent night. But for good ol' jolly belting I love hearing Andy Williams sing "It's the most wonderful time of the year!" and always have to sing along to "Rockin' around the Christmas tree."
"O Little Down of Bethlehem" - it tells the nativity story in an unexpected way by focusing on the unlikely birthplace of Jesus. Resonates with my soul.
"Yet in thy dark streets shineth the Everlasting Light. The hopes and fears of all the years are met in Thee tonight."
Oh, I love this post! "O Come All Ye Faithful" has always been a dear favorite of mine...and I can't help but have Handel's Messiah playing at all times in December (not even the "highlights" CD, but the one with all the obscure arias).
And that "Dominic the Donkey" is now stuck in my head with a vengeance. Love it!

I love Hark the Herald Angels and The First Noel and am addicted to Mariah Carey's Christmas album even though I'm not a fan of hers.
I love "O Holy Night," sorry Jama. I also love I wonder as I wander. and In the Bleak Midwinter. I guess I go for the haunting melodies, but I also love "What Child is this?" and "Carol of the Bells." "White Christmas" is another fave. In the newer songs I love "Santa's big red hat" by Harry Connick, Jr. and "My Grown-up Christmas list." I also love Il est né le divin enfant.
I live for Christmas carols, and it is always so hard to choose. I do love the traditional Norwegian "Jeg er so Glad." And "Twas in the Moon of Wintertime" gives me shivers every time I hear it. This year, my Advent devotions have used a new hymn, "Unexpected and Mysterious," as the theme, and I've found it to be quite lovely, too.

can make me cranky…
