Globe Trotting

Today's Wonder of the World is...the Globe!

I'm crazy about globes. I used to have three in my collection until Tanner the Slobber Dog ate my smallest one.
I always said he'd chew the whole world up if he could--and then he did it!
I can't say that I blame him. The love of globes seems to be universal.

It seems that everyone wants to have the whole world in his or her hands!

Even babies love them, which is fine, as long as they're careful.
We wouldn't want anyone blowing up the earth.

I don't know about you, but before I learned about its mantle and the core and the crust, I thought it'd be fun to tunnel through the earth. To get inside of it.

You can do that, you know.

I wonder what that feels like. Do you start craving gerbil food? Or feel like the boy in the bubble?
Or maybe it's like being inside your very own snow globe, minus the snow.

(Read the caption on that display! You won't believe it!)

I always wondered how people make globes. (Do you ever think about that? Maybe I watched too many episodes of Mister Rogers and his informative Picture Picture.) Anyway, THIS video made me so happy! Fascinating stuff.

Whether you're a map fiend, a geography buff, or you just think globes are pretty, it's wonder-full to have a model of our Big Blue Marble!

Enjoy some globe trotting, and tell me...are you a globe nut? What about snow globes? Are they tacky or awesome? Are you a Globetrotter fan? Are there any globes in the world that you can't do without?

Have a Wonder-full Thursday, everyone, wherever you are on the globe!
Love, Becky

Love globes Becky!! Not snow globes though, my daughter broke one once, and had to get stitches.
Thanks for the nice post as usual.

Hi Becky,

I love old maps and globes. At the rate of change, a new globe is outdated right away.

Have a wonderful day.

hugs,
Barb

Awesome video! I can't say I've ever wondered about how globes are made, but now I'm so informed. : ) Thanks!

I love globes because they make me feel small. In a good way.

I love globes too. My son just blew up the world a couple days ago. He's been batting it all over the house. I'm guessing the world is having a rough week.

His favorite globe though is the one that quizzes him on countries/capitals etc. It's kind of fun for me too.

I used to love watching the Globe Trotters. That video brought it back. I got a good laugh.

Have a great day!

I don't know if I could walk inside of a bubble - especially if it was sitting on top of water!! :)

I took the globe from my office - stuffed it behind the tailpipe of Deb's Durango & let the car run to see if I could cause global warming. Nuttin' happened.

Then I cut a slot in the top & stuffed my 401k money inside to see if I could help my personal global economy. Just before it was filled, the government took 45% of the assets & put a freeze on the balance to use toward solving future economic disasters.

Now I'm lookin' for one of Deb's snow globes - maybe I can crawl inside & get a side job plowing snow within the bubble.

Great - Now we've got a tornado warning - gotta go find Toto.....

I love globes!!! Obsession began in middle school.

Those floating globe gerbil balls are a little scary though!

Yes, absolutely, and you probably already knew it - I'm a global nut. I was 5 or 6 when I can remember my Dad showing me his globe in his home office - it was 13-14" dia glass and painted on the outside, with a lightbulb inside. Still they are always fascinating to look at. My Uncle has seen a huge one at the DeLorme headquarters and recommends a visit there just to see it. I remember very well going to the 1965 World's Fair in NY where one of the main objects still there is the huge globe! I think every school kid should be given a globe and be taught in the early grades, to be able to point out where the continents are, and be able to point to various countries and what they're known for. Remember on Jay Leno's "Jay Walking" - the person that thought Africa was a country in South America? Whoah - that's scary - - the important things that people are clueless about. 10 years ago we drove to the northern-most tip of Scotland and took a tour of the Caithness Glass company that is world renowned. Those beautiful 3" diameter solid glass spheres/globes with incredible designs inside. Snow globes - very cool - not a collector - but love the snow and real snow!!! I've seen those huge, transparent inflatables that you climb into. That would be awesome! You can see the fish and everything else below you - I think I would stop and rest every now and then, and look down at what's in the water below me - that would be such fun! Love our blue marble too. No scientist has yet to find another one like it.

Great blog sit as usual Rebecca!

I love globes. I cried when I broke mine--an antique one with a light inside it. It fell apart and I did, too! I'll have to get another one day.

I love globes and when I was little, used to spend time whenever I could looking at it, visiting all the different countries in my mind. I think that's why I like globes and maps so much, because I want to visit all those places someday!

I especially like the big platic bubbles in the water. They reminded me of snowglobes too!
