A Beard Bonanza

Today's Wonder of the World is...the Beard!

Flickr photo by free.to.be
I'll be honest with you, friends. I never considered beards to be much of a wonder until I saw the mustache/beard combo above at imadeyouabeard.etsy.com. After I got up off the floor and wiped the tears from my eyes, I saw facial hair in a brand new light.

Women get to do all sorts of nutty things to their hair: curl it, crimp it, perm it, straighten it, and roll it up in socks at night. Why should we get all the fun?

So men, you want a beard? You want to be creative? Go for it!

Just don't beard my cheek with your stubble, okey doke?
And keep it clean. We don't want you turning into Edward Lear.
You know good ole Edward, right?

He's the one who wrote
There was an Old Man with a beard,
Who said, 'It is just as I feared!
Two Owls and a Hen,
Four Larks and a Wren,
Have all built their nests in my beard!'

Maybe my Beard Anxiety Disorder (BAD) started way back with that Pat the Bunny book. Remember?
"Now you pat Daddy's scratchy face..."

But I don't want to pat Daddy's scratchy face. It freaks me out.

Or it could be that I was traumatized by this horror flick.

Yes, I know it was just a Disney movie. So what? I was a sensitive child.
Perhaps I've got a touch of pogonophobia, a fear of beards.

Maybe I'll try to desensitize myself. I'll make a list of perfectly nice people who sport hair on their faces.
Like my boyfriend Abe!

I'm feeling better already!

And how about Santa Claus?

It looks like Baby Sarah loved Santa's beard.
Yey! Pogonophobia isn't genetic!

Da Vinci had a nice beard and a cool hat to go with it.

Vincent van Gogh's beard isn't bad looking.

And who could forget Professor Dumbledore's beard?

Or the one on Papa Smurf!

Of course his is white. He's 542 years old!

So are you feeling envious of all that hair?
Maybe you could grow some of your own.

Yikes!
That's the work of artist Bart of lucyandbart.blogspot.com. Hop over for a visit, but prepare yourself! It's a little freaky!

If you prefer not to have your beard bubble up like a blue infection all over your face, maybe you should head to Etsy. (Get it? HEAD to Etsy? Ha ha.)
Where else but Etsy could you find wearable facial hair?
Of the scallop kind...

Or maybe you'd like yours more tightly knit.

If you're a minimalist, maybe this one's for you.

Very debonair!

So what are your thoughts on beards? Love them? Hate them? Do you want to build a nest in them?

Have a wonder-full Friday, y'all, and a fabulous weekend!
Love, Becky

I'm not a huge fan of the beard, but on some people they look very nice.

OK, I am officially freaked out. I do not like them, Sam I Am.

Happy Friday. Susan

This is so much fun! Love the felt and knitted beards, and that minimalist moustache is adorable. I've often thought of blogging about moustaches -- we're definitely on the same wave length :D!

Well, one thing's for certain: I don't want a beard!
Some men look quite nice in beards.

Depends on the guy. Some look awesome with a beard, others, when they don the facial hair hug, look like they've chosen a life of crime!

I've never really liked beards. I'm not sure why. They always scare me. Hmmm...

The dude with the derby seems to have too much time on his hands. Guess I can't comment today - I've had a beard, usually a goatee, for almost 35 years, but I keep it neatly trimmed. So There.

What? No Don Johnson scruff ala Miami Vice? My goodness!

I confess, once I filed a rough fingernail on daddy's beard in that Pat the bunny book while reading to my children.

Ok - i must have a yarn beard. actually - i could justify the need for three or more (you know - wise men, shepherds, etc.) but i like the pink one... wonder if that would work if the lights were low?

I wouldn't open the door for that blue pom-pom faced thing. Not by the hairs on my chinny-chin-chin!

Not a big beard fan.
Hope you have a great weekend!!

Can you say "crumb catcher"? No, thank you.

My favorite uncle has a loud voice, laughs a lot, and has always sported an Abe Lincoln beard (no moustache). I was terrified of him when I was very little. Even though I got over my fear of him long ago, and now love his loud voice and boistrous laughter, the dislike for beards remains. I guess that's why I married a Japanese man who can't grow more than a very sparse goatee!

I actually kind of like traditional beards. It depends on the guy.

But wow! Those whimsical ones are amazing. Somehow it makes sense that the Swiss and Germans would be so into this. Riiiiicola!

Hi Becky,

I am catching up a little bit. You never cease to amaze me. When will your next book be finished? I need a "fix".

Beards- on the right person-yes.
What a sweet photo of Sara.

Have a fab weekend.

hugs,
Barb

VERY FUNNY and a great post Becky!
Once on vacation, my father was letting his stubble grow out. I didn't like it one bit!! He dropped me off to go ice skating and left. The person working there came up to me to give me back some money, saying my father had overpaid. When I got back to our cabin, I explained the story to my father, except I said the person had said to "give my grandfather back his change". Needless to say my father went upstairs and shaved.

I never remembered to tell my father of my lie. It's too late now.
I did tell my mom.
It's pretty funny really, what an 8 year old will do to get their way!

The sight with all the beards is great!

My mom has been the bearded lady for Halloween. Does she have self esteem or what????

It's funny how you can get so used to seeing a person with a beard that you don't notice it anymore--take for instance the beards on your friends and uncles--and then you stick your foot in your mouth by announcing your Beard Anxiety Disorder to the entire internet!
It's funny that you can do that. And it's sort of embarrassing.
Love you, you bearded friends and relations!

Hello from France! My first visit to you--That was a prickly subject- loved all the photos and the inventiveness, but I think I, too, am not keen on beards, my husband gew one once andit aged him by at least ten years!! Great post though!

Becky that second guys beard was so crazy. I love Dumbledore's the best, because of course I love Dumbledore. The blue beard on that guy almot made me feel like throwing up.

Love the post. xoxo

Hate em! They seem dirty to me and gather left over bits far too easily!

Some of those were scary! My husband is always experimenting and growing various facial hairs. Of course he has lost most of the hair on top of his head so I try no to say much as I think he is just trying to compensate for his loss. Oh well.

Rebecca Ramsey said...

You all CRACK ME UP!
Sorry Renee if the blue beard made you nauseous. As Adrienne said, think of it as blue pom poms.
