Well Done, Sister Susan

Today's Wonder of the World is...Susan B. Anthony!

Happy Birthday one day late: February 15, 1820!
Thank you, Susan B, for championing women's rights, as well as the rights of African Americans.

Here she is, immortalized along with her friend Frederick Douglass in a park near her historic home in Rochester, New York.

What a brave woman she was!
She spent her youth terribly self conscious about her appearance and speaking abilities, and yet for forty five years she made 75-100 speeches per year!

She said things like:
Men, their rights and nothing more; women, their rights and nothing less.

Independence is happiness.

I think the girl who is able to earn her own living and pay her own way should be as happy as anybody on earth. The sense of independence and security is very sweet.

I distrust those people who know so well what God wants them to do, because I notice it always coincides with their own desires.

Resistance to tyranny is obedience to God.

Sadly, she died fourteen years before the passage of the 19th amendment, giving women the right to vote. She didn't make it to the promised land, but she sure paved the way!

"Organize, agitate, educate, must be our war cry."

She must have been really good at the agitating part.
I pity poor President Grover Cleveland. Not.

Do you have a Susan B. in your pocket?

How about forking over a few Susan B's for one of these?

Happy B-Day, Susan B!
Well done, Sister Suffragette!

Have a wonder-full Monday, y'all!
Put on a Votes for Women sash and enjoy one of my favorite tunes from Mary Poppins!

Love, Becky

Haha. I always have a big place in my heart for Susan B. Anthony. As soon as I learned about her in school, I loved her. How can you not love her? I'm guessing, though, that some of those men back in her day hated her. Shame on 'em.

I esp. love the line: "I distrust those people who know so well what God wants them to do, because I notice it always coincides with their own desires."

One of America's unsung heroes to be sure! I always showed my students the Ken Burns documentary on her and Elizabeth Cady Stanton--such sacrifice for them and for each of us--for no other reason than their dedication we should ALWAYS vote!

Happy Birthday to dear Susan B Anthony! Three cheers for all the suffragettes who have made it possible for women to vote! Happy President's day, too! :)

I wonder how many of us would have done all that Susan B. Anthony did! A remarkable woman. By the way, March is "Women's History Month."

Hi Becky,

That is my kind of woman!

I have missed visiting your blog. You always bring a smile to my face.
Thank you for still visiting even though I am MIA most of the time.

Love the tune- you know I just love Mary Poppins.

She had a wonderful name, too. It is a variation of the Hebrew word for lilly.

Happy Presidents Day to you, also.

Oh, and e-mail me when you can...I've something for you. Susan

I'm joining in the great chorus, as a daughter's daughter! Well done Sister Suffragette!

Susan B. Anthony rules and that quote about knowing what God wants is so true. HA!

Hi Becky,

I came across your blog and enjoyed my visit.

It was good to learn some history about Susan B. Anthony. Isn't it great that we had strong Ladies like her, to make it possible for women to vote.

Hugs
Carolyn

It would be nice if there was more recognition to all the women who carved the path for us to walk in.
I never knew the details of the abuse the women imprisoned for exclaiming the right to vote. They truly sacrificed their lives for their daughters and our future.
I applaud and thank them all for the blessing they bestowed.

Sweet Wishes,
Sara
